I have before my eyes--I have in my heart--the grand review of the miseries which have been seen to form a part of my own experience. But I would declare, on my oath, that among all these miseries, real as they are, and which I do not regard as few or small, the wor.st of all is the misery of the mind. In speaking of the incredible ignorance in which we now live in respect to each other, I refer to practical as well as speculative men; and the main cause of this ignorance is the notion that we have no need of mutual knowledge--the thousand mechanical means which exist, enabling us to act without soul; which allow us to dispense with the knowledge of what man really is; to regard him as a mechanical power, as a cypher. A cypher and an abstract thing ourselves, disembarrassed of vital action by the help of mechanism, we feel ourselves sinking lower every day, and turning to zero. I have observed, a hundred times, the perfect ignorance in which each class lives with regard to every other class, neither seeing nor wishing to see. We, for example, who profess cultivated minds, how difficult it seems for us to recognize that which is good in the people! We impute to them a thousand things which pertain, almost fatally, to their situation--an old or evil habit; some excess after long abstinence; a rude word; rough hands; and what else shall I say And what would become of us if they were less rough We look no further than the outside--on poverty of form--and see not...
